Evening, July 21, 2266.

Alex once again felt absolutely mentally out of it as he pulled the VR helmet off. It was Saturday afternoon and while only five days had gone by out here in reality, a full 15 had passed in ED and Alex’s internal clock would have been all over the place except that he was already used to this. The same could not be said for the rest of ED’s players who were just getting used to the system. As Alex looked over the forums he found many different posts talking about how many, who hadn’t even thought about sleeping while logged in, complained about how exhausted they were, and that if this was how they were going to feel all the time after playing they didn’t think they could handle it. In response to many such posts were suggestions to try sleeping while logged in. It had taken much longer in the past for this technique to be spread like this and under the suggestions were many players thanking the player for the idea after they had tried it for themselves. Alex went downstairs around 4:45 to find his mom in the middle of dinner prep as his dad sat at the table talking to her. It was Saturday night, one of the two times a week his dad was home around dinner time, the other being Sunday.

“Good evening son. How goes your quest to make a steady living?”

“Great. I think I just got a key piece of the equation and now just need to take the time to actually solve it.”

“Oh, really and what would that be?”

“Just some tools. It’s how you use them that matters. Oh, are you thinking about joining the dark side with me?”

“Oh no, just was curious as I have a few coworkers who are playing ED as well and they were really hurting for a few days, looking a lot like you do half the time, physically fine but mentally absent. However, apparently, they are doing great after spending some time sleeping in ED. Any thoughts on that?”

“Yah, that’s common sense. Your brain needs a break as well. I’ve done that multiple times as well, but sometimes things just don’t work out like that. Now, don’t think you can log in for three hours a day to sleep and think that it will work to replace the six to eight hours you currently get, as your body will have still only gotten a few hours at that point.”

“Still it’s interesting. I wonder what kind of applications this tech could have on individuals with sleep disorders.”

“Who knows? It should at least let their body get some rest.”

“Yah.”

Alex was well aware of the benefits ED would bring to not only those who had sleep issues, but all sorts of disabled individuals, save for those with brain damage, unfortunately. It would bring happiness and meaning back into many lives as they enjoyed exploring ED and regaining the use of limbs that were lost, or never there.
